On January 24, 2022, Statistics Canada released their updated life expectancy tables. Not surprisingly, this latest update shows a slight decline in life expectancy, due to the impact of COVID-19.
In addition to the standard three-year life tables (2018-2020), Statistics Canada also published tables for individual years (2020 and prior). Data for these single year tables do not include PEI or the Territories.
Statistics Canada states “In comparison to single-year life tables, three-year life tables provide more robust estimates of mortality indicators and time series that are less prone volatility on a short-term horizon”. The McKellar life expectancy tables use the 2018-2020 data. Please keep this in mind when analyzing other sources, as there may be slight inconsistencies depending on which life tables you use.
We have updated our website and will be updating our mobile apps for the new Life Expectancy tables shortly.
The new life tables will also be incorporated into our 2023 slide rules. The 2022 slide rules have already been printed and use the 2017-2019 life expectancy tables.
